What is the difference between Product and Fashion photography anyway?
I feel most often, fashion photography is not direct selling of “the product”, its more about selling a lifestyle that could be associated with the product. A pair of trainers is a pair of trainers is a pair of trainers… A pair of converse on the other hand comes with a lifestyle, which is very different to the lifestyle that comes with a pair of Reboks! Its about showing what people can do and the lives they could lead by having a pair of Cons, not what they look like.(Very different from product photography which is a photograph of the Converse to show exactly how they look for a shopping cart, so that people know what colour, shade details etc their new trainers are. (The unsexy part of the buying process)
I translate this into professional portrait and Headshot terms.. I believe the difference between one of our headshot’s and a regular headshot or ID photo is similar to the difference between product photography and fashion photography. We don’t just create a representation of how a you or another person looks, what hairstyle they have, what colour eyes do they have and skin tones, while our images contain this important information, we also let our images represent an individuals personality, their character and how it feels to be with that person, experience what its like to be around them, create a connection!
