One question that we know goes through people minds before their Headshot session is “How do I prepare for my headshot session?” Whether its for your personal branding campaign, a corporate photo for business or an actor / performer headshot, these tip will see you through to make the most of your session.
Here are some top tips for preparation of your professional Headshot session.
1 – CLOTHING:
Bring a couple of changes of clothing to give you more options. If you have a uniform bring this or a formal look, & often people like to have a more casual outfit also.
Bring only clothing that you really love and feel comfortable in.
Keep it simple, not too many patterns. Classic timeless styles are great and will help to make your Headshots last longer.
Extreme low cut tops, thins straps or strapless top are best left at home (These can make us look naked in a Headshot).
All freshly pressed of course.
2 – JEWELLERY:
This is a personal taste thing.. We find that subtle jewellery is best, simple studs or small rings for the ears & if a necklace is worn, keep it simple like a fine chain. Your Headshot is about creating a connection through your expressions and overly expressive jewellery pieces often take away focus.
3 – SKIN:
Avoid strong sun exposure a few days before, nothing like glowing red skin to make your Headshots stand out in the wrong ways. Also, extreme skin treatment is not recommended straight before your shoot.
4 – HAIR & MAKEUP:
We recommend that if you are going to have a haircut for your new Headshot, have it a couple of days before as sometimes it takes a couple of days to settle in.
As for make up, don’t do anything crazy, be yourself and keep it natural, its not a glamour shoot. We have an amazing Makeup artist (Makeup by Rebecca Burton) that we trust who can offer stunning natural looks (Ask for details)
5 – PEARLY WHITES (TEETH):
Try to avoid food and drinks that can stain teeth prior to your shoot, coffee, red wine etc.. You’re welcome to bring a toothbrush to give a freshen up, specially if your shoot is after lunch.
6 – SLEEP:
A good nights sleep will promote healthy skin and eyes, lets be fresh!
If you can avoid alcohol the night before thats also amazing to help us look and feel fresh!
7 – BEARDS:
For those of you with some facial hair scruff, you’re welcome to bring shaving equipment with you. That way we can get some shots with the edgy scruff, then you can whip out to the restroom shave, then we can shoot a whole new clean look.
8 – PRACTICE:
This one is a bonus tip.. Having your Headshot is almost like a performance on stage. Only you are acting at being the best version of yourself. Take some time in front of the mirror and practice moving your face around. (You’ll be surprised how most people forget how to move their face as soon as a camera is looking at them). Watch what your face does, try becoming Jim Carrey for a moment and have fun with it. Do you have a favourite side?
Don’t sweat this stuff, as at The Headshot Creative, we will shoot with a Headshot coaching style so that we can really get you feeling confident in front of the camera. You’ll be nailing it & owning the camera in no time!
